Castle Tour with General Admission Ticket €18.00 pp

Guided tours of the interior of Birr Castle will run Monday to Saturday throughout May, June, July & August, with tours running at 10:00, 11:30 & 13:00 daily.

On your tour of the castle your guide will lead you through a number of beautiful rooms while enlightening you on the history, the family, key pieces of furniture, and the collection of treasures within the rooms.

Pre-booking is essential for castle tours, and tours are suitable for age 12 upwards.

Family Quest

For those interested in nature, discovery and adventure, Birr Castle Gardens & Science Centre is the place for you. The team at Birr have created the “Family Quest” which will take the young and maybe not so young explorers on a journey through time, from great engineering feats to wildlife discoveries, and many more highlights in between.

Quest included in admission price and memberships. Suitable for all ages. Quest will be available from reception. No booking required.

Running daily from May to September, 09:00 to 17:00.

Nature Detectives Summer Camp –

Tuesday July 2nd until Friday July 5th

We are now taking bookings for our Nature Detectives Summer Camp. Do you have a child aged between 8 – 12 that loves learning about wildlife? This 4 day camp is designed to encourage their curiosity and understanding of the world around them. They will learn about tracking and nature awareness, explore the worlds of mini beasts, birds, amphibians, mammals and plants. They will be armed with pond dipping nets, butterfly nets, pooters, magnifying glasses and trail cams as they explore Birr Castle Demesne in all its glory. Make sure to bring your packed lunch each day and be prepared for all weather conditions. €80 per child 2 July – 5 July inclusive.

Free Bat Conservation Training

Venue: Pavilion, Birr Castle Gardens

Date & Time: Friday 12th July at 8.30pm

Starting off with a 1-hour presentation with another hour of discussion of sites followed by a visit to local waterway to demonstrate the survey methodology.

On the week of the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing I-LOFAR are hosting drop-in workshops all about SPACE!

Join us to learn about our Solar System and explore the different planets, find out why the moon is important and what it’s like there.

Suitable for 7 years and up. Parent supervision required.

50th Anniversary Celebrations of Apollo’s Moon Landing 

Starting at 20:00 on Saturday 20 July, the event will conclude at 23:30.

Join in the wonderful celebrations on the remarkable achievements of the Apollo’s 11 mission at Birr Castle Gardens & Science Centre in conjunction with Midlands Astronomy this July.

Starting with a STAR-B-Q (with 2 complimentary glasses of wine per adult) followed by the showing of the moon landing and star gazing in the shadow of the Great Telescope. Guided tours will also take place throughout the evening to the Science Galleries and include the story of the Great Telescope and the ground breaking I-LOFAR.

Pre-booking will be required for the event, limited space available.

Planet Science Kidz half day STEAM Science Summer Camps in collaboration with Education at Birr Castle Gardens

Birr Vintage Week and Arts Festival Masterclasses

This year Birr Vintage Week & Arts Festival are offering two Master classes, both set in the beautiful grounds of Birr Castle and using the pavilion as a base.

Acclaimed landscape painter Neal Greig will be leading a Plein Air Master class in the same setting as the 2017 Painting the Nation final. Neal is a multi award winning painter, including the prestigious Pollock Krastner award , and is a tutor at the Dublin Plein Air Festival.
Saturday August 3rd 10am -4.30pm – Cost €25

Harry Moore has spent many years developing his own take on pinhole photography, producing large format time based works . In this two day Master class he will introduce you to the medium and you will develop your own images. 

Thursday and Friday August 8th and 9th 10am – 4.30pm. Cost €60, all materials are supplied.

How do rockets work? Learn the science behind a rocket launch, design and build your very own ballistic family rocket and launch it to the International Space Station. Which family will successfully dock with the ISS? Whose rocket will travel the furthest?

Join us for a host of activities dedicated to wild children everywhere. A day for both young and old to show their “wild side” and reconnect with nature and the great outdoors. Go wild  with creative art, butterfly nets, pond dipping nets and pooters as we explore and learn about the many interesting animals around us. Discovery sessions held throughout the day.

Guaranteed fun and learning for all the family in the extraordinary surroundings of Birr Castle Gardens. 3 time slots on the day.

21:15 – 23:00 Meet in the Courtyard at Birr Castle.

Join us at Birr Castle Gardens and Science Centre as we celebrate International Bat Day and discover the many native bats that reclaim the skies above us each night.

Learn how to identify Ireland’s different bat species, how they hunt in darkness and why we should be happy to have them living alongside us.

At dusk, we’ll enter the demesne with our bat detectors and explore the treeline, rivers and lakeside listening for bats flying and feeding over the water and surrounding areas.

We have bat detectors that will be handed out for the evening, but please bring a torch if you have one.

The ground is uneven, so suitable footwear and clothing is essential.

49th Irish Hot Air Ballooning Championships 2019

22 – 27 September 2019

Evening Launch Tickets 16:30 to 19:00 –

€5.00 PP or €15.00 Family of 4. Free event for friends of Birr Castle Gardens and Science Centre.

Please note tickets purchased for the Hot Air Balloon Championships can be redeemed on any evening when flights are going ahead between 16:30 and 19:00. Access to the Demesne prior to this time will be at normal price.

The main launch HQ for the event will be Birr Castle Gardens and Science Centre with flights taking place over the beautiful town of Birr throughout the week.

It is not possible to provide flights to the public during the week however it is a fun, social event for everyone’s enjoyment so get your cameras ready and record your favourite shots for the album.

Ballooning is 100% weather dependent and subject to quite strict weather conditions, the balloons are scheduled to launch twice each day at approximately 7:30 am and 6:00 pm but public only have access to Birr Castle Demesne for the Evening flight.
